ISSA Introduction Course
WHAT is Street Soccer about?
It is a modern, creative and holistic approach to coaching. New knowledge about how to accelerate learning and development for young people.
HOW does it differ from the 'traditional' way?
Although it is complementary to conventional coaching it is much more holistic with a multi-dimensional approach. The methodology is player-centered with the emphasis being on self-learning, awareness and responsibility. The course focuses on developing a player’s creativity, imagination and innovation as these are at the root of every great achievement and is what will take us into the modern game.
WHAT will it do for players?
Children who are regularly coached through this programme will benefit in a number of ways. Firstly, physically they will ‘free-up’, start to move more fluently and become more technically proficient. Secondly, they will become better decision-makers, deal with pressure and learn to express themselves more positively. Finally the children will become more accomplished learners and learn how to think for themselves.
HOW will it benefit me?
As a coach you will gain several advantages. Firstly, it will give you that ‘extra dimension’ that perhaps other coaches have missed out on in their delivery. The extra knowledge, insight and tools of a new approach give you ‘added value’ which will benefit your children. It will increase your confidence because you will be able to coach and express yourself in your own unique way not copying a regimented system like many others. The bottom line is that it will make you more of an ‘all round’ coach who can deal with a wide variety of players and achieve better results!
WHY do we need it?
The modern game is changing week by week and we need to keep up or better still, stay ahead. Coaches who fail to see this will become like dinosaurs from the past and be left behind. There is a lot of new research, information and material inside and outside the sports domain which is invaluable to coach development and education – it is imperative that we keep up with all these factors in our game.
HOW will it fit into my coaching?
Many coaches that we have worked with have developed their own unique way of adapting Street Soccer into their coaching programme. The method is ‘coach friendly’ in that it allows you to make the choice of how you can integrate it to your existing style. Some use it in conjunction with the more traditional way so that players can experience both ways of learning whilst others find out what style suits each individual and coach them in that way - their preferred choice. We are finding out that there has been an imbalance in coaching for a few decades with a more authoritarian approach, which has limitations – the Street Soccer method seeks to address this.

Street Soccer and Initial Teacher Training
During our PGCE course we strive to encourage trainee PE teachers to reflect on their experience in order to inform their own practice. We obviously want them to develop their teaching competencies whilst at the same time developing their capacity to adopt innovative practice.
Street Soccer provides a very good example of how a different and innovative approach can help trainees to develop their ability to meet a wider range of students’ needs and adopt a wider range of teaching styles. With this activity, questioning becomes the focal skill in order to foster critical thinking, creativity and self- development. Indeed many of the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills within the revised curriculum are incorporated within the philosophy underpinning Street Soccer.
Trainees who engaged in the programme felt the course to be ‘highly motivating’ as it enabled them to ‘exchange ideas and view difficult situations
in an innovative light’. Trainees appreciated the challenges the course presented and enjoyed taking risks in order to develop their appreciation of creative learning. Street Soccer ensures the learning environment is viewed differently and learners are placed at the centre of the learning process.
